Right here, right now. Have you ever thought about what that really means?

To live with full consciousness is to engage all senses in the present activity. As humans we have become accustomed to losing ourselves in unproductive thoughts usually about past events or projection into the future. Our internal chatter has somewhat taken over our lives. Don’t get me wrong, thinking and exercising our brain is essential to life, but these thoughts must have purpose. Conditioning these thoughts is the aim of the game.

Recently I have engaged in meditation using the app Calm. While the social understanding of meditation is about relaxation, it is actually the opposite. The purpose of meditation is to encourage mindfulness and improve the ability to stay in the moment. A series of practices are undertaken in order to get to this stage, such as practicing patience, awareness and focusing on breathing. I find it particularly effective sitting outside amongst the trees, breathing in the beautiful fresh air!

Above everything, meditation has made me more aware of when I am slipping out of the present and into a pool of thoughts. Becoming actively aware of your own thinking habits is the first step to changing the way you perceive situations and how present you are.

The great thing is, practicing meditation is not difficult, it just takes time. I hope you take some time out of your day to focus on meditating. Let me know how it goes in the comments below!

Remember, there is no time like now...
